This collaboration with creative campaigner Sophie Thomas was exhibited during Collect Open at the Saatchi Gallery. This event is a platform for individual artists to show ambitious and conceptual craft-led installations. Our piece Broken Ocean represented the colossal flow of plastic pollution that runs into our seas every minute of every day - currently a rubbish truck load a minute. Working with blown glass, waste glass fragments, found ocean plastic from Hawaii and other beaches from around the world and recovered nets this piece references the chaotic bueaty of entangled ghost nets being pulled from the deep oceans. Broken Ocean was awarded the Collect Open Award.

We used a number of glass making techniques including engraving onto the glass with imaginary illustrations and enamelling images of nets, ships and seas onto waste glass shards which were then embedded into the surface of a series of large vessels. We also worked with amongst others Surfers Against Sewage to collect ropes, nets and ocean debris from the beaches in Cornwall.

Two pieces from the installation were purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum and will now form part of their permanent glass collection. More works from this series can be seen on the Broken Ocean page in the portfolio.
